Nightshade Family

Two days ago Gwen broke out in a rash around her mouth and chin while eating dinner. We gave her some tomato sauce among other things. We thought she had an allergic reaction to something in the sauce…onion maybe or garlic. But we gave her eggplant tonight with no sauce and the rash came back. It wasn’t bad and gone within thirty minutes, but I had never heard of anyone being allergic to eggplant. Apparently eggplant is part of the nightshade family. Nightshade? I’ve never heard of it either. It includes vegetables such has white potatos, tomatoes, some peppers, paprika, cayenne, and red pepper.

Makes sense now. She could have an allergy to both tomatoes and eggplant. We’ll steer clear of nightshades for a little while.

  1. It is always strange to find out how things are connected. We found out our guy had a peanut allergy because he reacted to green peas. Both are legumes, so the reacting to both is common. Who knew though? Best to keep an eye on her and I suggest going to an allergist (not your pediatrician) should the reactions persist. Best of luck!
